Thompson Twins – Hold Me Now

I have a picture,
Pinned to my wall.
An image of you and of me and we’re laughing and loving it all.
Look at our life now, tattered and torn.
We fuss and we fight and delight in the tears that we cry until dawn
Hold me now, warm my heart
Stay with me, let loving start (let loving start)
You say I’m a dreamer, we’re two of a kind
Both of us searching for some perfrct world we know we’ll never find
So perhaps I should leave here, yeah yeah go far away
But you know that there’s no where that I’d rather be than with you here
Today
Hold me now, warm my heart
Stay with me, let loving start (let loving start)
You ask if I love you, well what can I say?
You know that I do and if this is just one of those games that we play
So I’ll sing you a new song, please don’t cry anymore
And then I’ll ask your forgiveness, though I don’t know just what I’m
Asking it for
Hold me now, warm my heart
Stay with me, let loving start (let loving start)

This means something different to me to what the songwriters probably intended. Strangely this came on the radio this morning and provided me with much needed inspiration.
It is especially poignant to me as it was one of my brother’s favourite bands and he is no longer here.
Quite often I have listened and interpreted this differently – I have several photos of us laughing in frames on my wall and I imagine him talking to me through the words of songs sometimes. (might sound crazy but it is true).
The bit that gets me is the line “you know that there is nowhere that I’d rather be than with you here today”  I always think if only ……..

Song Lyric Sunday – Drive

Hi everyone,

My choice for drive just has to be Gary Numan. Might sound dated now but was the soundtrack to much of my youth as we drove around in Escorts and Cortinas or sat in my bedroom perfecting  Gary’s “moody” look. Apparently that was only because he had bad teeth although I only found that out recently!

Pretty simple lyrics – just perfectly explains how we feel in our little “bubble”

Here in my car
I feel safest of all
I can lock all my doors
It’s the only way to live
In cars
Here in my car
I can only receive
I can listen to you
It keeps me stable for days
In cars
Here in my car
Where the image breaks down
Will you visit me please
If I open my door
In cars
Here in my car
I know I’ve started to think
About leaving tonight
Although nothing seems right
In cars
In cars, in cars, in cars
In my car, in my car, in my car, in my car
In cars, in cars
In my car, in my car, in my car, in my car
(I’ve been sittin’, I’ve been sittin’, I’ve been sittin’, I’ve been sittin’)
In cars, in cars
In my car, in my car, in my car, in my car
(I’ve been sittin’, I’ve been sittin’, I’ve been sittin’, I’ve been sittin’)
In cars, in cars
In my car, in my car, in my car, in my car
(I’ve been sittin’, I’ve been sittin’, I’ve been sittin’, I’ve been sittin’)
In cars, in cars
In my car, in my car
(I’ve been sittin’, I’ve been sittin’)

Song Lyric Sunday : Drink

Ok … here goes first post ever and a tad nervous but taking up the  Song Lyric Sunday Challenge.

My choice for “drink” comes from the fabulous Squeeze.

She unscrews the top of a new whiskey bottle
And shuffles about in her candle lit hovel,
Like some kind of witch with blue fingers in mittens
She smells like the cat and the neighbours she sickens,
The black and white T. V. Has long seen a picture
The cross on the wall is a permanent fixture,
The postman delivers the final reminders
She sells off her silver and poodles in china.

(Chorus:)
Drinks to remember, I me and myself
And winds up the clock
And knocks dust from the shelf
Home is a love that I miss very much
So the past has been bottled and labelled with love.

During the war time an american pilot
Made every air raid a time of excitement,
She moved to his prairie and married the texan
She learnt from a distance how love was a lesson,
He became drinker and she became mother
She knew that one day she’d be one or the other,
He ate himself older, drunk himself dizzy
Proud of her features, she kept herself pretty.

[Chorus:]

He like a cowboy died drunk in his slumber
Out on the porch in the middle of summer,
She crossed the ocean back home to her family
But they had retired to roads that were sandy,
She moved home alone without friends or relations
Lived in a world full of age reservation,
On moth eaten armchairs she’d say that say sod all
The friends who had left her to drink from the bottle.

[Chorus:]

[Chorus:]
Songwriters: CHRISTOPHER DIFFORD, GLENN TILBROOK

Absolutely love this as it is sheer poetry put to words and the listener is encouraged to join in with a jaunty little ditty until after a while it becomes clear that the story (Squeeze always like to actually tell a story with their lyrics) is actually about a tragic figure shunned by the neighbours who started life full of hope, fell in love and through a series of events which gradually unfurl she becomes a hopeless drunk, alone and with just memories of what could have been.

Hope you enjoy it.
